ABSTRACT

This presentation will begin with an overview of the justifications for revising Standard Methods Section 3125 Metals by ICP-MS. These include it being long overdue (2009), a need to add information on interference removal, a need for spectral interference checks, a need for Rare Earth Element corrections and a need to introduces inorganic speciation.

A brief overview of plasma-based instrumentation will be given to aid in understanding the unique challenges presented by plasma-based instrumentation.
Activities of the Joint Task Group charged with revising this section will be reviewed.

Much of the presentation will explore the decisions made by the Joint Task Group and why.

A major part of the revision is adding a quality control standard to validate the use of reaction and collision cell gases. An inter-lab study will be undertaken, and preliminary data will be reviewed.

The presentation will conclude by exploring the remaining steps needed to revise the section and the future steps the Joint Task Group has planned.
