ABSTRACT

A good quality analytical result requires that each step in the process of creating that result is of known and documented quality. Tremendous effort has gone into understanding and controlling/documenting the quality of the analytical instrument step and the data handling post-analysis. But what about sampling and the sample preparation step? These steps are more difficult to control and to document on a granular level. As the demands on sample prep have increased to better take advantage of the increased capabilities of analytical instruments, new approaches are needed. This paper will outline some of the problems in sample preparation and discuss how they might be moderated.
