ABSTRACT

Water quality and clean environments are near and dear to all of us. In particular, we want our communities and neighborhoods to be free of toxins and pristine.

This presentation will showcase 2 programs in Virginia which generate environmental data that is highly reliable. Citizens partipating in these local community field interventions do the research, collect the data, and provide valuable metrics used by community leaders and government to develop sound decison-making.

One of the two initiatives includes a mapping program of the urban core to identify and address heat islands exacerbated by climate change impacts stemming from excessive heat. The second project looks at collecting water sample data from community streams and tributaries. This information is used in a state database to help address needed mitigation efforts for water quality improvement and conservation across the community.
