Hannah Safford
Hannah Safford is a Ph.D. student in environmental engineering at UC Davis, where she researches novel methods for detection and quantification of viruses in wastewater. She is especially interested in the policy implications of this work, including the value of wastewater-based epidemiology for public health and the role that rapid virus detection can play in advanced water reuse. Hannah has deep experience working on both sides of the science-policy nexus, including as a fellow at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under the Obama Administration, as a member of multiple policy committees for President Biden's successful 2020 campaign, as
a technical editor for the Federation of American Scientists' Day One Project, and as Chair of the City of Davis Natural Resources Commission. She holds a B.S.E. in Chemical and Biological Engineering, an M.Eng in Environmental Engineering and Water Resources, and an MPA in Public and International Affairs, all from Princeton University.
