ABSTRACT

Researchers at Georgetown University, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Environmental Protection Agency recently created a new Masters degree program in Environmental Metrology and Policy (EMAP). The EMAP program provides students hands-on experience with the latest equipment and methodologies used in environmental metrology, an understanding of risk assessment, and an appreciation of the impact of these disciplines on environmental policymaking. This presentation will discuss the significant role metrology plays in informing environmental policies, using the Particulate Matter National Ambient Air Quality Standard and recent experiences with lead in Flint, MI drinking water as case studies. In addition, the presenter will provide his perspective on the most important environmental research challenges/opportunities that need to be addressed.
