The United States Department of Energy’s Radiological and Environmental Sciences (RESL) has been producing radiological proficiency testing (PT) materials and testing laboratories analytical capabilities for decades. These PT materials contain a mixture of alpha, beta and gamma emitting radionuclides in a real world matrix, that are homogeneous and have known values that are directly traceable to NIST.
The RESL Site-Specific Performance Evaluation Program (SSPEP) is a double-blind PE program that answers “How Reliable Are the Experimental Results Obtained from Routine Radiochemical and Inorganic/Mass Analyses?” Each RESL Site-Specific Performance Evaluation Program (SSPEP) is specifically designed based on the needs of the individual customers. Various DOE, government agencies, state governments, and international customers request specific performance evaluation (PE) samples from RESL. RESL has conducted the MAPEP program since 1994, through a performance based PE program that tests the ability of the laboratories to correctly analyze for radiological, and inorganic constituents representative of those at DOE sites. In 2012, RESL started producing a wide variety of radiological Certified Reference Materials (CRM) that contains alpha, beta and gamma emitting radionuclides and inorganic analytes. These CRMs are accredited to ISO 17034 (2377.03).
This presentation will discuss the RESL programs and the proper use and availability of CRM and PT materials as they pertain to radiochemical and inorganic analyses.
