UCMR4 Monitoring: Staying Ahead of the Curve

ABSTRACT
On December 11, 2015, the US EPA published a list of 30 proposed UCMR4 (the 4th Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule) analytes which may potentially be present in tap water but are not yet subject to EPA’s drinking water standards set under the Safety Drinking Water Act. These additional compounds will be monitored for their occurrence in public water systems [1]. The list includes one cyanotoxin group analyzed by ELISA; nine cyanotoxins by EPA methods 544 and 545; two metals by method 200.8; eight pesticides plus one pesticide manufacturing byproduct by method 525.3; three brominated haloacetic acids by method 552.3 or 557; three alcohols by method 541; and three semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) by method 530.
As a commercial vendor, UCT has been developing methods for UCMR4 analytes using our existing product line which includes manufactured solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges and HPLC columns. This poster will present the SPE setup, extraction procedure, instrumental conditions, and analytical performance of five UCMR4 methods, including EPA methods 525.3, 530, 541, 544, and 545, which will facilitate the environmental testing laboratories preparation for the approaching UCMR4 monitoring.
