ABSTRACT

A candid conversation on smarter lab tools, AI, and the real limitations shaping the future of environmental testing.

Environmental laboratories are under increasing pressure to adopt smarter digital tools and explore artificial intelligence, all while continuing to deliver data that regulators, utilities, and the public can trust. Between the headlines and the hype, many labs are left wondering what these technologies realistically deliver in practice today, and where the real limitations begin.
This session will be delivered as a fireside-style conversation between two LIMS experts with years of experience working in (and with) environmental laboratories. Rather than the traditional slide-driven presentation, the discussion will focus on candid, real-world experiences with modern lab tools, including AI, and the practical realities labs face when trying to implement them.
The conversation will explore questions many labs are already asking:
• What problems are smarter tools actually solving today?
• Where do foundational systems like LIMS matter most?
• Where does AI add measurable value, and where does it introduce risk or unintended consequences?
Throughout the session, audience questions and experiences will be encouraged and woven into the discussion.
By focusing on honest dialogue and shared lessons learned, this session aims to help attendees leave with a clearer, more realistic understanding of how environmental labs can move forward with modern tools while maintaining transparency, accountability, and trust in the data they produce.
