ABSTRACT
Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely used disinfectants and surfactants whose environmental persistence and potential biological impacts require sensitive and selective analytical methods. Here, we present high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) workflows for the targeted and non-targeted characterization of QACs across diverse matrices. The method achieves identification of benzylalkyldimethyl and dialkyldimethyl ammonium homologues using accurate-mass precursor ions and MS/MS fragmentation. Data-independent acquisition enhances confidence in structural elucidation, facilitating the detection of known QAC. Applied to environmental samples, the LC QTOF HRMS approach demonstrates robust performance and comprehensive coverage, providing an effective monitoring of QAC occurrence and fate.
