ABSTRACT

In the 2021 Clean Water Act Methods Update Rule, a new method was approved for ammonia and TKN measurements. The method was inspired by an approach used by oceanographers for very sensitive and robust measurement of ammonia, and it had been applied to environmental monitoring purposes in laboratories outside the United States.

Since the MUR approval, the OPA method has been deployed in many U.S. locations. This presentation discusses practical advantages of the method, based on feedback from end users. Special focus will be placed on ways that it can improve the efficiency and safety of laboratory operations as far as ammonia and TKN measurements are concerned.
