ABSTRACT

The SW-846 Compendium, formally titled "Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods (SW-846)”, is a collection of more than 200 test methods and associated guidance that is published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery. The SW-846 methods contain procedures for field and laboratory quality control, sampling, determining hazardous constituents in wastes, determining hazardous characteristics of wastes (toxicity, ignitability, reactivity, and corrosivity), and for determining physical properties of wastes. These methods are used by government and the regulated community to demonstrate compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations, characterize and manage hazardous waste, support risk management decisions associated with contaminated site cleanup, and more. This presentation will update NEMC attendees on current method development activities, including:
• New and revised analytical methods for PFAS testing
• Validated methods, including 5030C and 5035A
• Method 3050C: Acid Digestion of Sediments, Sludges, and Soils
• Adapting Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework (LEAF) methods 1313-1316 to organics
• Collaborations with the US Department of Defense, other EPA offices, and ASTM International
