Mr Schiessel has been performing environmental analyses for organics for over 19 years. For the last 14 years, he has been performing organics analysis on drinking water, groundwater, wastewater, and solid matrices using various techniques such as GC, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC, and LC-MS/MS. He implemented numerous methods for routine analysis including the most recent UCMR(4) where he successfully brought online all 6 organics methods in which Babcock Labs was certified by the EPA and chosen as one of the few contract labs for small systems. He was a primary chemist for the UCMR3 running methods all three organics methods including 537. He has extensive experience running samples for emerging contaminants at trace ng/L levels using LC-MS/MS and has analyzed over 6000 samples specifically for PFAS analysis. He has been directly using LC-MS/MS as a chemist for 9 years where he has developed other novel techniques for unregulated emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pyrethroids, and nitrosamines in aqueous matrices at trace ng/L levels. Using this extensive LC-MS/MS experience and highest level of quality assurance, he developed a robust method for PFAS in non-potable aqueous matrices obtaining accreditation in 2019 under DoD ELAP program through ANAB. He understands the specific challenges associated with implementing methods for routine analysis using LC-MS/MS compared to other commonly used techniques like GC-MS. He is a currently a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and serves on the ACS board for his local section.
