Krista Ternus
Krista Ternus, Ph.D. serves as a lead subject matter expert in genomics and bioinformatics at Signature Science, LLC. Dr. Ternus earned a B.S. in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 2004 and a Ph.D. in Genetics from Texas A&M University in 2009, working in the Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in genomics at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University Medicine before beginning her work at Signature Science in 2012. Dr. Ternus has led numerous efforts analyzing high-throughput next generation sequencing data for microbial genomics and metagenomics projects and has served as the Lead SME for bioinformatics initiatives for the DoD Biosurveillance and Microbial Forensic Capabilities, including guiding the development, optimization, and validation of customized genomics laboratory workflows and bioinformatics pipelines. She is currently leading a project to evaluate, optimize, and deliver open source bioinformatics and statistical tools identify organisms within complex, non-clinical metagenome sequences with high confidence, and to characterize gene and functional content and allow for the comparative analysis of multiple metagenomic samples. In addition, Dr. Ternus is also leading an effort to develop, modify, optimize, and integrate of multiple predictive modules to perform rapid sequence and protein structure comparisons for the IARPA Functional Genomic and Computational Assessment of Threats Program.
