ABSTRACT

Per/polyfluoroalkyl substances are man-made compounds used in diverse applications in the United States since the 1940s. Applications includes food packaging, fire-fighting, non-stick products, paints, oil recovery, and electronics manufacturing which led to the environmental contamination we are observing today. The importance of this analysis is due to these compounds have been shown to bioaccumulate in fish, animals and humans and can result in decreased birth weights, decreases in the immune system and cancer. Recently the analysis of perflourinated alkyl acids in water are designated to liquid chromatography mass spectrometry instrumentation due to the analyte structure and sample solution. With advances in gas chromatography capillary columns and mass spectrometry ion sources it allows for this analysis to be also GC/MS applicable. This work will show the difference between electron ionization and chemical ionization for optimal detection limits and robustness. The chromatographic separation will be discussed utilizing different stationary phases based on the analyte list from the EPA method 8327.
