ABSTRACT
Current analytical methods for testing microbial contaminants in the environment have significant limitations. The culture-based methods are limited to those bacteria and fungi that can grow under laboratory conditions but we know that many microbes are non-culturable. Quantitative PCR methods work well but only specific microbes can be targeted. Advances in next-gen sequencing are opening up new ways of identifying the microbes in our environment with a broader community (microbiome) approach. This presentation will explore the use of metagenomic sequencing and its application in characterizing the microbial contaminants found in the environment that may be impacting human health.
