ABSTRACT

The presence of hazardous materials such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals and heavy metals in industrial and municipal wastewaters has become a major environmental pollution problem of global concern, and the treatment of these waters before discharge is considered one of the most important and challenging areas of water management. We developed a number of magnetic core hybrid nanoparticle sorbents with different functional groups, and successfully applied them in the remediation of heavy metal ions, hydrophobic compounds, pesticides, natural organic matter, oxyanions and emerging organic contaminants. In this study, we monitored the simultaneous removal of multiple low concentration contaminants by using these novel magnetic nanoparticle sorbents. Using Agilent’s ICP-MS and LC/MS/MS, the high throughput sorption isotherm analysis was conducted. Sorption mechanisms were proposed based on the physicochemical properties of the contaminants.
