ABSTRACT

Initiating the drinking water laboratory certification program for Cryptosporidium to provide effective oversight and ensure that public water systems met regulatory requirements involved a diligent approach to establish standard quality assurance procedures in the method. This was a concerted effort that involved the engagement of stakeholders representing scientists, technicians, and vendors. Integral to establishing an effective program was the availability of accurately counted oocyst suspensions that were used for establishing baseline criteria for accurate and precise laboratory measurement. After establishing the program and leading the approval of crypto laboratories through the first round of LT2 monitoring, EPA worked with states to integrate certification/oversight activities into existing state certification programs.
