Charles Appleby

Mr Appleby holds a bachelor degree in chemistry from California Polytechnic State University, and has over 35 years of experience in organic analytical chemistry, quality assurance, and laboratory management. Early on, he was employed with the New York State Health Department in Albany, NY and tested samples for pesticides from Love Canal. As a contractor for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Region 7, Mr. Appleby prepared and tested samples for dioxin from Times Beach, MO. He has been involved with the Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) for data review, data quality assessment, and laboratory evaluation, since 1988, first as a contractor, and since 2003 as a staff member of EPA. While working at EPA Region 4, Mr. Appleby reviewed data from samples collected after Hurricane Katrina. He has served as CLP Organic and Non-Routine Analytical Services Program Manager since 2010. Mr Appleby was a recipient of a US EPA team gold award for data quality consulting in 2009 while working at Region 4 EPA, authored the first set of National Functional Guidelines (NFG) for the review of polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxin and dibenzo furan data in 2010, and has been teaching and presenting on data quality since 2000.
