ABSTRACT
Advances in technology have allowed for greater information sharing and immediacy. While such headway has made big data possible and, ultimately, has helped environmental laboratories and agencies better protect the public, it has also created communicative barriers for an industry replete with technical information. This presentation will address common problems environmental laboratories and public agencies face when communicating highly technical information to data users and other external audiences, such as the public. In addition, this presentation will examine how communication breakdowns within the workplace itself can affect an organization’s overall success. Because of the increasingly significant role technology plays in organizational communication, the presentation will explore both online and offline media use, specifically social networking platforms and mass communication tools and materials. The presentation will also examine case studies of various organizations who have either been successful or unsuccessful in their internal and external communication efforts. Best practice communication strategies will be discussed.
