ABSTRACT

Nutrient monitoring for the assessment of water quality threats in our streams, rivers, and estuaries is a laborious and overall costly process. Current water quality monitoring practices include grab and composite samples analyzed in a laboratory and multi-parameter sondes placed in-situ and serviced on a frequent basis.

To overcome data gaps as a result of frequent grab and composite sample analyses, the frequent servicing of sondes, and the inability to process results in a continuous real-time mode, a novel side stream approach was developed that integrates highly accurate probes and analyzers with real-time monitoring, event monitoring and data processing. Our current monitor has been functioned for a year and has withstood an earthquake, a hurricane, a tornado and a flood. A case study is presented.
