ABSTRACT

ASTM Committee D19 on Water has been leading in the international effort to develop standardized methods for the sampling, sample preparation, and analysis of microplastics in water. In this presentation, we briefly describe the ASTM practices for sampling and sample preparation because they are prerequisites to subsequent analysis. Then, we describe a direct imaging method for quantitation of smaller particles used in conjunction with a method for identification and quantitation of microplastics using IR Microscopy and microscopy with a benchtop IR, depending on particle size. Single laboratory data and status of the method will be presented. Finally, we will illustrate how the various ASTM methods and practices fit together to provide a comprehensive picture of the microplastic contamination in the sample.
