ABSTRACT

The word ‘risk’ is mentioned 17 times in the latest version of the ISO 10725:2017 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. The concept of risk-based thinking has replaced preventative actions and allowed the reduction of prescriptive requirements. However, it has added some confusion and a bit of panic for laboratories as to what type of risk analysis and management is sufficient. Risk analysis often strikes fear into the heart of people who have been involved in environmental risk assessments. The basics of risk analysis and management do not have to be daunting or overly complicated. We will discuss the basics of risk analysis and management as it applies to environmental laboratories in ways to be efficient and beneficial.
