ABSTRACT

Glyphosate is part of a group of herbicides referred to as phospho-herbicides and is the most commonly used herbicide worldwide (for instance in the Round-up) with around 25% of the global herbicide market.

As very polar molecules, the sampling and the analysis of Glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is still a challenge. Indeed, they are difficult to extract with common sorbents. A new sorbent based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIP) was developed for Glyphosate and AMPA. A MIP is a synthetic material which shows affinity for a target molecule. A MIP has been synthesized for the extraction of Glyphosate and AMPA as Solid phase extraction. In this work, we will show the good ability of this new sorbent to catch both molecules with good recoveries without fastidious derivatization step of Glyphosate prior to LC-MS/MS analysis.

This MIP was as well used successfully as sorbent in an integrative passive sampler (POCIS). During several days, the POCIS concentrated Glyphosate and AMPA with a linear accumulation of these analytes. Several natural (surface, ground, mineral) waters with very different physicochemical properties were successfully tested.
