ABSTRACT

Speciation studies are able to provide in depth information about chemical species bioavailability and toxicity and are therefore becoming increasingly important in the world we live in today. Since certain chemical species of mercury can elicit acute and chronically toxic responses in humans and other animals in the receiving environment, the number of studies related to these analytes has been increasing. Although GC-ICP-MS has been the instrument of choice for such analyses over the years, due to complex sample preparation HPLC-ICP-MS has come forward as an attractive alternative technique for their characterization, with detection limits in many cases which are fit-for-purpose.
Here, we present methods for the speciation of mercury in a high trophic level species of fish using HPLC-ICP-MS and describe the method in terms of resolution, accuracy and sample run times.
